Breaches Cost $1.25 Million/Year in Canada

A recent survey reveals that Canadian companies and government organizations collectively lose $1.25 million annually, on average, to security breaches. Nearly a quarter of firms in Canada are dissatisfied with their own security policies. The survey, conducted by the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management and Telus Corp., covered 300 private, publicly-traded and government organizations across the country.

Google and Viacom Reach Privacy Agreement

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in New York ordered Google to give Viacom detailed records about YouTube users, including their screen names, IP addresses and videos viewed. Viacom had requested the information as part of its $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against Google's YouTube. The judge clearly didn't understand or pay any heed to privacy. Thankfully, Google and Viacom are being responsive to widespread international privacy concerns. On July 14th, Google and Viacom signed an agreement whereby Google will be allowed to anonymize data that otherwise could identify individual YouTube users, while still complying with the court's order.
